The Production
The two act ballet is a traditional rendition of Marius Petipa’s Nutcracker, choreographed for El Paso Youth Ballet by Erick Campos, distinguished choreographer and former dancer for the National Company in Mexico City. Members of the youth company will be featured in leading roles and will demonstrate their technique and artistry in the one and a half hour production. There are close to 60 youth and 20 adult local performers.

Christine Howard, an El Paso native and recent graduate of the Arizona State University dance program, will be sharing the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy with Leslie Lopez. Christine is currently auditioning for professional dance companies all over the country. Leslie, a former student of UTEP’s own Andrée Harper, is currently in her last year of training with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre.

Alejandro Herrera, an El Paso native, has been cast in the role of the Nutcracker Prince.  Alejandro is currently training with Leslie Browne, former principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre in New York City who appeared in the film “The Turning Point.” Isabella Rodriguez, accomplished soloist with the youth company, will perform the technically demanding role of Russian.  Juan Rojas, a Socorro High School graduate, will partner Ariela Katz in the Arabian dance. Juan is currently training in Pittsburgh, PA. Ariela Katz will also dance the role of the Snow Queen. She attends El Paso High School and has trained with prestigious ballet schools in the U.S. and Mexico. Two young El Paso Conservatory of Dance students, Victoria Villarreal and Aimeé Galindo, will dance the coveted role of Clara on alternate dates.
