The State Data Center within the Oklahoma Department of Commerce and the U.S. Government Documents Division of the Oklahoma Department of Libraries will jointly host two Census Training Workshops on Tuesday, June 24, 2008, at the Fort Smith Main Public Library.
These free, hands-on workshops will teach participants how to access data from the American Community Survey, the Economic Census, and the Decennial Census of Population and Housing. Discussion will also include brief updates on preparations for the 2010 Census and other topics as time and interest permits.
Participants in these workshops typically include researchers, grant writers, representatives from local governments, economic development leaders, and others who want to learn more about using statistical data from the US Census Bureau.
Those who attend the workshop will learn how to:
Get Census data for the area around a home or business street address
Find economic data by zip code, city, county, or metropolitan area
Locate social characteristics data for local Indian tribes
Obtain profiles of major industries by county
Get educational attainment data by age, race, and sex
AND download the information into an easy to use spreadsheet format
The workshops are free and open to the public, with the first session running from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. The second session is a repeat of the first and runs from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Both workshops will be held in the 2nd floor computer lab at the Fort Smith Main Public Library, located at 3201 Rogers Avenue, Fort Smith, Arkansas. Detailed directions to the library can be found at: http://www.fortsmithlibrary.org/fsplmaindirections.html.
