Dia De Los Muertos Exhibit

A series of recent photographs by Lourdes Moreno from three cemeteries in Michoacan. Available to be viewed on October 20th will be an ofrenda or offering, and small ofrendas made by local elementary school children from Escuela Montessori.

Folk Art Activities for Children

Local educators will lead children age six and up in crafts to commemorate Día de los Muertos, a yearly remembrance of ancestors. Materials to make traditional papel picado/pierced paper, a calca/skeleton of Catrina, zempasúchil/marigold flowers, and calcas/skeleton string puppets are provided by the museum.

The Past is Sweet! Exhibit
Chamizal National Memorial

The Los Paisanos Gallery at Chamizal National Memorial is currently hosting a “must see” exhibit. It’s a look at park and local history, Mexican culture, folklore, and Day of the Dead all wrapped into one great exhibit. There’s even a little about Frida Kahlo thrown in for good measure. What’s so unique about it? It’s all made entirely of sugar!

This exhibit offers something for everyone so please plan to visit the park soon. The exhibit runs through mid-November.

Los Paisanos Gallery is located in the west wing of the Chamizal National Memorial administrative building. The gallery is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., and during the same hours on Saturdays by requesting access with a park ranger at the visitor center information desk.

Exhibit

The Sunland Art Gallery gets an early jump on Día de los Muertos celebrations with an exhibit of paintings depicting the popular Mexican day of remembrance. More than 15 artists created new images of traditional calaveras and catrinas for the exhibit, which runs through October 31st in the gallery at Sunland Park Mall. Prints and cards are also available.

Great Southwest Book Fair

The El Paso Public Library hosts the fourth annual Great Southwest Book Fair to be held at the Main Library. The lineup of authors features a who’s who of literary talent including internationally acclaimed authors and storytellers such as Joe Hayes, Xavier Garza, Graciela Limon, Claudia Martinez, Rich Mussler and Hal Marcus.

The Halloween themed event will include spooky stories as well as a Trick or Treat Parade of Costumes for kids with lots of free candy. Used book dealers and publishers from throughout the Southwest will be on-hand with great bargains for avid readers.

In addition, internationally renowned author, Carlos Fuentes, will be a special guest of the Great Southwest Book Fair, in conjunction with the Mexican Consulate in El Paso, the Instituto Chihuahuense de la Cultura, S-Mart Supermarkets and the Big Read from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Plaza Theater.

Admission to hear Fuentes speak is free but tickets are required. Free tickets will be given away at the Main Library located 501 N. Oregon beginning on Thursday, October 8. In addition, a limited supply of tickets will be raffled off every hour at the Great Southwest Book Fair.

Dia de los Muertos Festival at Concordia

November 1st, 2009
4:00 pm – 8:00 pm.

SPONSORED BY THE CONCORDIA HERITAGE ASSOCIATION AND THE PASO DEL NORTE PARANORMAL SOCIETY.

There will be Dia De Los Muertos related booths, vendors, games, hay rides, music and fun for the entire family. Portions of the cemetery will be decorated in traditional Mexican style with altars, candles, and painted skulls.

Capstone Productions hosts their new film with El Paso history as only the spirits can tell. All new film with new stories and more locations including Fort Bliss, the L&J Cafe and Monteleone’s restaurant. In San Elizario, a psychic confronts a legend about Billy the Kid and the local jail. The program also visits Concordia Cemetery, the Magoffin Home and Sunset Heights Grocery.

Ghost Stories of El Paso, Volume 2 is not intended to prove or disprove ghost stories, but to explore some of the legends and folk tales that are a part of El Paso’s rich history.
