By Franco Cevallos, Editor of “Nuestra Comunidad” A popular saying that “man is the
only animal that hits his head
twice” seems to be a phantom
behind the Persian, Iraq and Afghanistan
wars, the election of the first black president,
Immigration Reform, and now, the so needed
and heated controversy of “Health Care
reform”. What all these heated issues have had
in common is that greed, lies and fear have
played a major part in them.
We can still remember the lies handed by
George W. Bush and Dick Cheney to push
America to invade Iraq and waist billions of
dollars to massacre thousands of innocent
people, saying that Sadam had weapons of
mass destruction. Well, he didn’t have them.
Another lie during election to stop the first
Afro American president from being elected
was that he was not a U.S. citizen, and that he
was a Socialist that would nationalize every
business in America. Well, his birth certificate
proved he was born in Hawaii.
The same folks, usually Republicans,
religious fanatics, uneducated, intolerant
and racist and so called “patriotics”, again
disseminated lies to stop an Immigration
Reform by saying that undocumented workers
are criminals who deplete the resources of
the states, when everybody can see that the
majority of them are hard working people who
are not allowed to receive any help because
they do not have a green card nor a social
security number.
Finally, the same folks who were behind
all the mentioned issues have flocked Town
Hall meetings called by the Republicans Tom
Coburn, Tom Cole, Mary Fallen, Jim Imhofe
and even, by the Democrat Dan Boren to hear
them defend the greedy, dehumanized and
inhuman insurance companies. The worse
part is that these people have believed the lies
that these legislators, that seem to work for
the Lobbyists and the powerful corporations,
have handed them and have opposed a so
badly needed socialist government Health
care Plan.
They have believed lies that the elderly
are going to lose most of their benefits of
Medicare and Medicaid; that a health care
program is unaffordable, but wars are not;
that a socialized health program will do away
with the dehumanized health care insurance
companies, etc. etc.
Well, for those folks that have opposed
health care for the 46 million uninsured
who can’t afford it, the thinking folks who
are for a true health care reform tells them
to wake up! and not let the same greedy and
deceitful people who have always lied to
America brainwash them, because none of
those statements are true. The truth is that
people from Cuba and most so-called “third
world” countries in Latin America have
free hospitalization and medicines and the
choice for health care provided by insurance
companies is still there.
Bottom line: Socialized quality health care
can be provided paid by the taxes we pay
like in Europe and Latin America. If we can
afford to waist billions of dollars in weapons
to destroy other nations, certainly, we can
afford to provide health care for suffering
poor Americans.
