WASHINGTON – Tomorrow the ACLU, Immigration Policy Center (IPC), Low Wage Immigrant Worker (LWIW) Coalition and National Immigration Law Center (NILC) will hold a teleconference at 12:30 p.m. EDT about the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) proposed “no match” rule, which was republished on March 21 for public comment.
The rule would use the error-ridden Social Security database for immigration enforcement by requiring employers to fire workers who are unable to resolve discrepancies in their Social Security records.
Public comments on the new rule must be filed by Friday, April 25. Representatives from the four organizations will discuss serious concerns raised by new evidence submitted in the comments and in a paper showing that the “No Match” rule would result in massive firings of U.S. citizens and other authorized workers and impose devastating costs on American businesses and the economy.
WHO: Lucas Guttentag, ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project Director Marielena Hincapié, NILC Staff Attorney and Director of Programs Michele Waslin, IPC Senior Policy Analyst Sarita Gupta, Jobs with Justice Executive Director, representing LWIW Coalition
